US Congressman says a 'new day' for Lebanon began, Lebanese Army will do what is required
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met Friday at the Grand Serail with U.S. Congressman Darrell Issa, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson and Nijad Fares, vice president of the Task Force for Lebanon, to discuss the latest developments and Lebanese-American relations.
Speaking after the meeting, Issa described the moment as "a new day for Lebanon," noting recent progress and emphasizing reconstruction in the south and across the country.
He highlighted urgent needs in sectors such as electricity and water and said the United States, together with partners in Europe and the Gulf, could work swiftly to address them. Discussions also touched on ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), banking sector restructuring, and other economic matters.
"None of this would be possible without an effective and united government," Issa said.
On Hezbollah's refusal to disarm, Issa pointed to a Lebanese Cabinet decision in line with the 1989 agreement mandating all militias to hand over their weapons.
"I believe every loyal Lebanese wants weapons in the hands of the state," he said, expressing hope that the process would be voluntary. He added that the Lebanese Army is expected to act on the decision by the end of August.
Asked about Israel's decision to take control of Gaza, Issa said the talks focused strictly on Lebanese issues. He contrasted Lebanon's situation with that of the Palestinians, citing Lebanon's functioning government and its ability to provide security.
Issa said he would travel to Egypt for talks on Gaza, particularly regarding humanitarian aid, and noted that U.S. President Donald Trump had announced humanitarian assistance for Gaza.
