Lebanese Red Cross says operations continue under strict measures in conflict-hit south

The Lebanese Red Cross said Saturday that ongoing hostilities in southern Lebanon are forcing the organization to follow stricter procedures before dispatching emergency teams to border areas.

In a statement, the organization said that, due to the current “hostile operations,” its response to humanitarian calls and the movement of its teams in southern border regions now requires prior notification to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and waiting until a safe passage is secured to ensure protection for crews carrying out their missions.

The organization added that it continues to perform its duties despite the dangerous conditions, but emphasized the need to adopt strict protective measures following injuries and a “painful loss” among its personnel.

The Lebanese Red Cross said it is maintaining close coordination with UNIFIL, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Lebanese army to secure safe routes for its teams amid what it described as extremely hazardous circumstances.

It also renewed its call for full respect of international humanitarian law and for the protection of medical and emergency crews operating in conflict zones.
