Rubio: Israel has no territorial claims in Lebanon, US working to strengthen Lebanese Army capabilities

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Israel has no territorial claims in Lebanon, stressing that Israel’s issue is with Hezbollah rather than the Lebanese state.

Rubio said the United States is working on a system that would allow selected units within the Lebanese Army to receive the training, equipment, and capabilities needed to confront Hezbollah.

He also said Israel should not establish a buffer zone inside Lebanon, adding that he does not believe the Israelis want such a presence in the long term and that they would say they do not seek a permanent presence in Lebanon.

Rubio further noted that while the Lebanese Army may have the will, it does not yet possess the full capability to address all threats posed by Hezbollah within Lebanese territory.
