Lebanese Ministers highlight port scanner rollout and customs modernization efforts

Lebanon's Public Works Minister, Fayez Rasamny, described the activation of cargo scanners at Beirut Port as a key achievement aimed at boosting state revenues and strengthening oversight.

Speaking from the port, Rasamny noted that training new personnel will take time but stressed that staff are expected to carry out their duties with a strong sense of national responsibility. He added that ensuring the safety and security of the port remains a top priority, while authorities continue to address issues related to the 2020 explosion to prevent a similar disaster from happening again.

Finance Minister Yassine Jaber also emphasized the importance of the scanners' operation as part of broader efforts to modernize customs procedures.

Jaber said Lebanon is working to upgrade customs operations by adopting advanced software systems and artificial intelligence technologies to analyze cargo images. He added that a pre-declaration system for imported goods is being introduced, alongside a new information system currently being implemented by the customs administration.
