LBCI sources: Lebanese lawmakers debate death penalty reform, proposal includes sentence reductions

Lebanese lawmakers discussed proposed amendments related to the death penalty, according to information reported by LBCI.

Sources said MP Nabil Bader suggested replacing the death penalty with a fixed prison term of 28 years.

Further discussions reportedly led to an emerging draft formula that would replace capital punishment with a 29-year prison sentence, reduce life imprisonment terms to 17 years, and adopt a legal "merger" mechanism whereby the highest sentence is applied in cases of multiple convictions, while reducing other sentences by one-third.

LBCI also reported that the proposed framework includes provisions related to deported individuals to Israel, as well as reduced sentences for those convicted in drug-related cases.

The deliberations come as parliament continues to review broader judicial reforms and sentencing standards amid ongoing political debate over criminal justice policy.
