President Aoun: Reform must start from within, crisis is a trust issue not only economic

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun stressed that reform must begin from within and not from abroad, noting that Lebanon is rich in human resources both at home and in the diaspora, and that these capabilities must be activated and given the right opportunities.

He said the current crisis cannot be described as purely economic, but rather as a crisis of trust between the state and the people, and between Lebanon and the outside world.

Speaking before the General Assembly of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, he said the council represents a bridge to rebuilding this trust, calling on its members to play an active role and not allow others to take their place, including in shaping legislation.

He expressed hope that the crisis and the suffering of Lebanese citizens—especially in the south—will come to an end so Lebanon can get back on track.

He added that even if a country is rich in resources, it cannot succeed without sound governance, stressing that Lebanon’s problem lies in the mismanagement of its resources.

He also said efforts are ongoing to reopen Arab markets, particularly Gulf markets, to Lebanese products, and to restore confidence that has been shaken in recent years.
