President Aoun: Diplomacy is not surrender but a means to end wars

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that negotiations are a safer option than war, stressing that Lebanon will not back away from its commitment to dialogue despite ongoing challenges.

Speaking before a delegation from the Lebanese Private Sector Network, Aoun said: “We have seen, and continue to see, the devastation and consequences of war. Negotiations will not solve the problem overnight, but they are a process that takes time, and we have no other choice.”

He added that some people mistakenly view negotiations as a form of surrender. “That is not the case,” he said. “Negotiation is not a concession, but rather a way to end wars while minimizing the damage.”

Aoun reaffirmed that Lebanese officials remain committed to the diplomatic track, saying: “We will not retreat from this choice. All of us in Lebanon, as officials, are doing everything possible. Negotiations may face obstacles or be delayed in reaching the outcome we seek, but they are moving forward. All issues are ultimately resolved through negotiations, no matter how long they take. War will not produce results for any side.”

The president also said the Lebanese army has never declared that southern Lebanon is completely demilitarized or free of weapons. However, he noted that, from a military perspective, the army has established operational control over the area.

He explained that fully removing weapons from the south will require time due to the region’s mountainous terrain and valleys, adding that the army has fulfilled its responsibilities in this regard.

Aoun further stated that the rockets launched at the start of the war originated from areas north of the Litani River. 

He also argued that Israel has not helped implement the ceasefire agreement, noting that under the deal it was required to withdraw from five positions it occupied. Instead, he said, Israel has continued military operations and strikes on villages under the pretext of self-defense.
