Rising threat: Israeli army seeks urgent solutions to counter Hezbollah drones

Report by Amal Shehadeh, English adaptation by Yasmine Jaroudi

Israel's military is scrambling to find rapid solutions to counter the growing threat posed by drones used by Hezbollah, after acknowledging limitations in its ability to intercept them and protect its forces on the ground.

According to Israeli military assessments, efforts are underway to deploy new tools, including shotguns, specialized optical systems, and mobile tactical radars that can accompany soldiers in the field. These radars are designed to emit low sound signals and, combined with visual detection systems, create an early warning mechanism similar to a "red alert," giving troops a few seconds to prepare before a drone strike.

The initiative is being developed in coordination with foreign militaries, as Israel seeks to accelerate operational solutions to a threat that has intensified in recent weeks.

However, Israeli security officials have admitted that there is no guarantee of near-term success. Some of the proposed technological responses are still not fully operational, raising concerns about continued vulnerability on the battlefield.

Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir broke his silence on the issue, warning that Israel will not withdraw from Lebanon or other fronts until long-term security is ensured. He also declared that 2026 would be a year of intensified fighting.

Zamir's remarks were made during a closed meeting at the Ramat David Airbase, reflecting growing concern within military circles over the evolving threat.

As anxiety over drone attacks rises in Tel Aviv, Hezbollah continues to target Israeli troops inside Lebanese territory, while the Israeli military has been instructed to maintain the pace of its operations.
