European Council backs Lebanon’s cabinet measures in call with President Aoun

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun received a phone call on Monday evening from European Council President Antonio Costa, who expressed the Council’s support for the measures adopted earlier in the day by Lebanon’s Cabinet.

Costa said the European Council backs the government’s steps aimed at preserving the state’s exclusive authority over decisions of war and peace and banning illegal military and security activities.

He also affirmed the Council’s readiness to assist Lebanon in areas it deems necessary to extend state sovereignty over its entire territory.

President Aoun thanked Costa for the support Lebanon receives from the European Union, calling for pressure on Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon.

In a separate call, Aoun spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who expressed the Palestinian people’s solidarity with Lebanon amid current developments and reaffirmed the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to helping achieve security and stability in the country.
